School Uniform?

We all know the pain of having to crawl out of bed at 6:30 and put on an itchy, unflattering school uniform. For at least 6 hours a day say students lose their sense of self identity and are forced to comply with school rules and, while it's not all that bad, it would make our lives that little bit easier if we were allowed to dress how we wanted. I’m not saying completely let us loose, just to at least give us a bit more freedom. Teachers will tell you we wear a uniform because you will have to wear one in the future. However, some jobs aren’t like this. Some say to dress business casual and I can guarantee at least 50%  of us don’t even know what business casual looks like! Even if your job does have a uniform, school doesn’t prepare you for what to wear to the interview.

Another thing teachers will say is  that we do it as some parents don’t have the money to buy new clothes all the time. This is a very valid point. However, my school uniform for a girl (excluding school shoes) is £77.93 and that’s enough to buy at least 5 new outfits. Another thing I can say that enrages us is when we are told to take our jewellery off or piercings out and the teacher who is telling us has their nose pierced with a bracelet and necklace on  and has decided to dye their hair purple. It seems so hypocritical! I highly doubt that my jewellery or unnatural hair colour is distracting someone, and even if it is, then yours is as well.

This is a critical time in our lives. We will all begin to feel insecure in secondary school and as our bodies start changing, some of us just want to show up in a baggy jumper and jeans. So, in my opinion schools should have a dress code like sixth form so we can feel comfortable and confident in what we wear. And if you can’t comply with this one simple request, then teachers should be given the same uniform or have to comply with our rules on earrings, jewellery and hair colour.
