As a child, there's nothing more exciting than hearing the phrase, "We're going to the zoo". Even parents enjoy going because they get the chance to see animals they would never have seen otherwise. However, as much as it is a pleasure for us, being in a zoo is an animal's worst nightmare.
To start off with, keeping animals in cages is cruel. They are supposed to have freedom and be in their natural environment. In some zoos, there isn't enough room for them to roam, which will increase the animal's boredom. This could lead to animal getting irritated and agitated. An example of this is when you see lions pacing up and down after having children tap and bang on the glass enclosures. These poor animals! What did they do wrong in order for us to lock them up? Personally for me, although I'm sure many of you will also agree, I would much rather see my siblings being kept in these cages - not these innocent, desperate animals.
Another thing wrong with zoos is that they don't allow animals to act how they should, and children don't get the right education about what animals are like in the wild. For example, the way they search for food. In the wild, many animals have to chase and attack their prey, whereas in zoos, their food source is made a lot easier. Therefore, if the animal ever did get let back into the wild, its chance of survival is a lot lower than average. This is so unfair on the animals as they didn't choose to live like this.
One last thing I'm going to talk about is safety. Although many enclosures are secure, most of the bear cages are open-topped and the viewing points are raised. Instead of being sensible and following simple rules, some people's stupidity creates danger. There have been many reports where unsupervised children sit on the bars of the enclosures and fall in, which can cause injury. Also, lots of animals' natural instinct is to attack and therefore, a lot of fuss is caused. Unfortunately, this normally results in the animal being shot or put down. It is hugely unfair. Not only is it the child's fault for behaving in such an unsafe way, it is also the parent or guardian's fault for allowing this to happen. Imagine how guilty you would feel, knowing your ignorance has taken an innocent animal's life.
I could go on, as there are lots of reasons as to why I think it is unnecessary to keep animals locked up and force them to live in insufficient spaces. However, I think I have made myself clear about my thoughts on zoos and I hope other people reading this can understand a few of the points I have made.
